Tools, Techniques & Finishing
The Wood Center field guide
Build the skills behind a better finish.
Small home projects rely on a few repeatable skills: accurate layout, secure workholding, suitable drilling and careful surface preparation. Learn each operation on scrap before using it on a finished component.
Start with a secure setup
Read the instructions for your tool. Plan how the work will be supported and clamped, and keep the operating area clear. Disconnect power before changing accessories or making adjustments where the tool instructions require it.
Understand the hole you need
A pilot hole helps the screw enter the receiving wood. A clearance hole lets the passing part of a screw move freely through the upper board. A countersink seats a matching screw head. These operations solve different problems.
Prepare for your chosen finish
Remove defects and scratches without rounding over details you want to keep. The final sanding grit and cleaning method should suit the particular coating, so choose the finish before deciding that surface preparation is complete.
